Busing Woes

Special transportation is a related service under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Districts must provide special transportation when required to enable a child to benefit from his or her education.

Over the past week or so, news outlets have reported on possible bus driver shortages stemming from the pandemic. You might be concerned about whether your child with special needs will have a bus route in place for the start of school this month. Beyond the issuance of a bus route, your school district must ensure that your child’s busing is appropriately tailored to your child’s medical needs. We hope that appropriate busing will be in place for your child’s first day of school, but if not, you may have options, such as the right to seek funding for private transportation at your school district’s expense.
