Day 37: Observation and Assessment

Today, New York State’s Governor announced a collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to ‘reimagine education’ in light of our new normal. For many children with special education needs, face-to-face, hands-on instruction provided by trained educators is indispensable. This premise is clear to so many parents currently engaging in mandatory homeschooling, also known as crisis schooling. Nonetheless, I encourage parents to think about how digital platforms can be used to support their child’s learning during the pandemic. One theory that comes to mind is the use of virtual observations and virtual assessments.

Assessments enable our special education professionals to differentiate a curriculum to meet a particular child’s needs. Assessments also endeavor to quantify a child’s progress towards meeting certain objectives. Educators can then ascertain whether their teaching strategies are effective or require tweaking.
