Day 44: Parental Engagement

According to the research, there is a correlation between parental involvement and educational success, including academic performance. That is why parents are afforded a number of rights under the special education laws. Parents have the right to meaningful participation in the development of their child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). Parental participation includes informed consent prior to evaluation and delivery of services, prior written notice of any proposed changes to the child’s program, parent training and counseling where appropriate, language access, progress reports on IEP goals, and the right to an impartial hearing to challenge the school district’s offer of special education.

Parent training and counseling is a related service to help parents support the school’s implementation of the child’s IEP. Parent training provides parents with useful tools to help their children transfer skills learned during the school day to the home environment.
