Day 47: Expanded Summer Distance Learning in NYC
Today, New York City announced an unprecedented wave of mandatory summer distance learning for public school students. The expanded summer education offerings seem to be in place to help students who have lost ground due to the school closures. For example, distance learning will be required for a cohort of elementary and middle school students who have not met criteria for promotion to the next grade. It will also be required for high schoolers who have not yet passed necessary courses.
Unfortunately, today’s announcement did not include expanded school learning for children with disabilities, specifically. Therefore, each parent of a special education student will need to consider his or her child’s needs on an individualized basis. Even students who have not been classified with a disability — but fall within the newly expanded category of summer school — may need an individualized assessment as well. Perhaps, now, their needs rise to the level of special education eligibility.

Be well and be optimistic,
