Test to Stay: New CDC Guidance on Quarantining Students

Recognizing the negative impact of quarantining students on their receipt of education, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) added a new section to its K-12 guidance titled “Test to Stay” or “TTS”: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/science/science-briefs/transmission_k_12_schools.html#anchor_1639603965438 . TTS can be implemented in different ways, according to the CDC. In the studies highlighted by the CDC, a student was permitted to continue attending school after exposure to Covid if

  • the exposure occurred in school;

  • the student was correctly and consistently wearing a mask during exposure;

  • the student submitted to multiple Covid tests, such as twice a week or every other day of the quarantine period;

  • the student remained asymptomatic; and

  • the student adhered to the CDC’s quarantine guidance outside of school.

Today, the CDC also recommended universal indoor masking for children age two and up who attend Early Childhood Education programs: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/schools-childcare/child-care-guidance.html .
