School's out! But what does this mean for your special needs child?

If you’re like me, you’re probably still reeling from the news conferences today announcing school closures across the tri-state area. The coronavirus has left us all in a state of uncertainty, if not shock.

Parents of children with special needs face challenges beyond finding available and affordable child care. These parents rely on the special education system to implement a prescribed education plan designed to meet their child’s day-to-day needs. For many families, special education is inextricably tied to their child’s quality of life.

You may be wondering—

  • How long can I/my child tolerate each day without a school placement?

  • Am I trained enough to attempt classroom strategies in my home?

  • Do I have the equipment and technology to replicate my child’s therapy sessions?

  • Will I have access to foods in my child’s restricted diet?

  • How/when will my child meet his IEP goals?

  • What about my child’s upcoming IEP meeting? Will it still take place?

  • Will my child’s school year be extended to make up for the school closure?

The purpose of this blog is to gather relevant and up-to-date information and resources for families during this difficult time. Be sure to check back here for updates. We may not have all the answers right now, but in time, we will figure this out. Our children are depending on us.

Stay safe, everyone.
