Autism Screening by your PCP

For Autism Awareness Month, MSR Legal is examining how your family’s network or community can assist in early screening for autism spectrum disorder (“ASD”). Today’s blog post focuses on your child’s primary care physician (“PCP”). Amongst the screening and developmental surveillance tools that your child’s PCP may use are:

  • Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers

  • Parent’s Observation of Social Interactions

  • Screening Tool for Autism in Toddlers & Young Children

  • Social Communication Questionnaire

  • Autism Spectrum Rating Scales

Use of these screening tools can lead to a referral to your county’s Early Intervention program; your district’s Committee on Preschool Special Education (“CPSE”) or Committee on Special Education (“CSE”); a local applied behavior analysis (“ABA”) service provider agency; or your State Medicaid agency for support and resources.

If you suspect that your child may have a developmental delay or disability and are curious about what the special education laws require, book an initial email consultation here: https://www.msrlegal.org/book-your-consultation. Enjoy your weekend,
