Day 11: The Stress of Regression
By now, you’ve realized that you cannot recreate a classroom inside your living room or kitchen. As we all embarked on our third week of mandatory homeschooling today, some parents have already begun to notice a regression in their child’s skills. Perhaps your child is having more toileting accidents now, or is mouthing toys and other objects. Or maybe your child has become more aggressive and less communicative, or is displaying maladaptive behaviors that you had not observed in months. Regression is heartbreaking for any parent to see, especially those parents who fight hard each year for an appropriate special education. It may feel like all of the progress you fought for is now becoming undone, right before your eyes.
Before you unravel yourself, please know that your time, energy, and resources have not been wasted. If you’re concerned about your child’s loss of skills during this pandemic, you’re not alone. Until next time, stay safe,
