Day 63: Preparing for September in New York City

Despite the Governor’s Executive Order permitting in-person special education over the summer, it appears that the New York City Department of Education (DOE) will maintain its school closures at least until September. Several news outlets are reporting that the DOE is in the process of planning a reopening that will incorporate the following changes:

  • Personal protective equipment and monitoring of health indicators;

  • A focus on the social-emotional needs of the school community in light of the trauma experienced by the community;

  • A blended learning approach of in-person instruction and remote instruction;

  • Limiting the number of students and staff in the buildings with staggered start dates and start times;

  • Enhanced cleaning and sanitation protocols; and

  • Adjusted school transportation and meals.

MSR Legal is closely following the City’s school reopening plans as well as those of the surrounding suburban districts.
