Day 64: Sickle-Cell Warriors
Today’s post is dedicated to children battling hematologic disorders, including sickle-cell anemia. Children with special health care needs sometimes require specialized support in school. This type of support can come in the form of an implemented Individualized Education Program or a Section 504 Accommodations Plan.
The types of supports potentially available range in intensity and frequency, and may include one or more of the following:
instruction during periods of hospitalization;
home instruction during recovery periods;
private school for medically fragile students;
school nurse or school health services, such a 1:1 nurse on the school bus and throughout the school day;
designated health paraprofessional;
remedial tutoring to make up for missed instruction time;
extended school year services;
parent counseling and training;
physical therapy;
psychological and/or social work services, including counseling;
modified locker and classroom placement to avoid stairs or crowded hallways;
flexible class schedules to accommodate the child’s tolerance for a full school day and medical appointments;
accessible school building with elevators and ramps; and
medical services for diagnostic or evaluation purposes.
