Day 64: Sickle-Cell Warriors

Today’s post is dedicated to children battling hematologic disorders, including sickle-cell anemia. Children with special health care needs sometimes require specialized support in school. This type of support can come in the form of an implemented Individualized Education Program or a Section 504 Accommodations Plan.

The types of supports potentially available range in intensity and frequency, and may include one or more of the following:

  • instruction during periods of hospitalization;

  • home instruction during recovery periods;

  • private school for medically fragile students;

  • school nurse or school health services, such a 1:1 nurse on the school bus and throughout the school day;

  • designated health paraprofessional;

  • remedial tutoring to make up for missed instruction time;

  • extended school year services;

  • parent counseling and training;

  • physical therapy;

  • psychological and/or social work services, including counseling;

  • modified locker and classroom placement to avoid stairs or crowded hallways;

  • flexible class schedules to accommodate the child’s tolerance for a full school day and medical appointments;

  • accessible school building with elevators and ramps; and

  • medical services for diagnostic or evaluation purposes.
