Education 2021: A New Special Education Agenda

While special education for children with disabilities is largely implemented at a local level, it is governed and guided by federal law. Here’s a glance at the special education platform of the incoming federal administration:

  • To invest in mental health resources in schools: Increase the number of school-based mental health professionals, including psychologists, counselors, nurses, social workers, and other health professionals.

  • To invest in schools as community hubs: Expand the community school model which offers preventive care and wraparound support to more easily address unmet living and health care needs.

  • To increase federal funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): Plan to fulfill the federal government’s original funding obligation under the IDEA, in order to alleviate the financial burden on state and local governments. '

  • To invest in career and technical education: Promote partnerships for vocational training between schools, community colleges, and employers.

  • To invest in pediatric developmental surveillance: Provide funds for early childhood development experts in pediatric clinics with a high percentage of Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program recipients.
