Education 2021: A New Special Education Agenda
While special education for children with disabilities is largely implemented at a local level, it is governed and guided by federal law. Here’s a glance at the special education platform of the incoming federal administration:
To invest in mental health resources in schools: Increase the number of school-based mental health professionals, including psychologists, counselors, nurses, social workers, and other health professionals.
To invest in schools as community hubs: Expand the community school model which offers preventive care and wraparound support to more easily address unmet living and health care needs.
To increase federal funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): Plan to fulfill the federal government’s original funding obligation under the IDEA, in order to alleviate the financial burden on state and local governments. '
To invest in career and technical education: Promote partnerships for vocational training between schools, community colleges, and employers.
To invest in pediatric developmental surveillance: Provide funds for early childhood development experts in pediatric clinics with a high percentage of Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program recipients.
