Turning 5: Kindergarten Readiness

The term ‘school readiness’ will connote a different meaning for each child, depending on the child’s present needs. If you’re a pre-k parent considering a kindergarten program that follows the general education curriculum, check out this poster from the Long Island Pre-K Inititative: https://www.nassauboces.org/cms/lib/NY01928409/Centricity/Domain/1319/KindergartnersNeedtoKnow_English.pdf

According to survey research conducted by the Long Island Pre-K Initiative and The Early Years Institute, there are a number of skills that children should have by Day 1 of kindergarten. These skills are grouped within the categories of Social Skills; Reading, Writing, & Listening; Everyday Skills; and Numbers and Colors.

Are you worried about your child’s readiness for kindergarten next year? Do you think your child needs a more intensive program right now? Or perhaps another year of preschool altogether?
