National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month

One of my first clients as a new special education lawyer back in 2008 was a child in need of a special transportation aide, or ‘porter’. The transportation aide was necessary to assist the child in going up and down the stairs of his apartment building to and from the school bus. The child was wheelchair-bound, and neither his parents nor his home health were able to carry him and his wheelchair up and down those steps.

Over the years, I have represented several children diagnosed with cerebral palsy. As I reflect on National Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, I think about the different ways in which the condition can impact a child’s learning as well as the breadth of services potentially available to meet the child’s needs. Specialized transportation services is just one form of relief that your child may be eligible for on a year-to-year basis in order to access his or her education. Other forms of relief might include assistive technology such as an augmentative and alternative communication (“AAC”) device; school-based adaptive equipment and supplies such as a changing table, diapers, and wipes; toileting paraprofessional services; health paraprofessional services; school nursing services; feeding therapy; therapeutic recreation; functional communication training; social skills training; instruction in activities of daily living (“ADL”); gait training; a supported standing program.; and private school tuition.

Your child’s medical condition should not limit his or her access to an appropriate special education program.
