The Buffalo & Uvalde Tragedies

The tragedies of the past two weeks have absolutely gutted me, starting with the Buffalo, New York supermarket shootings to the recent killings in Uvalde, Texas. A number of thoughts have run through my head: How does a child reach adulthood with such depravity as to lack respect for the value of human life? And, does our society have an expectation that law enforcement officials take a bullet for members of the public, and if so, how are we preparing law enforcement for that type of responsibility?

What can we do as parents and education advocates right now? I think we need to have serious conversations about tightening up security in our schools; improving coordination between our schools and local law enforcement; and understanding how to recognize warning signs of homicidal tendencies in addition to suicidal ones.
