Special Needs & Covid Isolation

If you have had to care for a child with special needs on Covid isolation, you’re probably exhausted from figuring out how to manage your child’s symptoms and emotional well-being while also keeping yourself and the rest of the household safe. Logging onto Google Classroom to keep up with assignments may be the furthest thing from your mind. So what happens after your child weathers the virus and is ready to return to school, having missed anywhere between 5 to 10 days of learning and extracurricular activities?

If your child has an IEP, he or she is entitled to receive all of the missed special education services. If your child does not have an IEP, but has been struggling to keep up academically, this may be the time to consider refering him or her for a special education evaluation. If your child has a Section 504 Plan and is heavily reliant on classroom accommodations, you might need to reconvene the 504 Committee to discuss how to get your child’s learning back on track. If your child reemerges from isolation with lingering mental health or physical issues, you’ll also need to seek additional support from your child’s school.
