The U.S. Supreme Court Rules on Student Freedom of Speech

Earlier this week, the United States Supreme Court issued a ruling in which it analyzed the extent to which students can be punished for off-campus speech. The Justices ruled in favor of protecting off-campus speech to the extent that such speech does not disrupt learning within the school environment. It’s important to note that student expression that constitutes bullying or harassment is not protected.

Special needs parents may find themselves on either side of this issue. Your child may be the victim of hateful speech, or perhaps your child is considered the aggressor, whose special education needs have not been met.
