Day 17: Changes to Graduation Requirements

Earlier today, the New York State Education Department announced important changes to the State’s graduation requirements. These changes impact students who were slated to take the June 2020 Regents examinations as well as students planning to utilize alternative pathways to graduate with a local or Regents diploma. In essence, the June 2020 Regents exams are cancelled, as well as Department-approved Pathway Assessments. Depending on whether the student meets specified criteria, the student will be exempted from passing the particular Regents exam or assessment in order to graduate.

What I found noticeably missing from today’s guidance was any mention of compensatory education including make-up transition services for time missed due to the school closures.

As a former associate for a school board law firm, I am well-versed in the various pathways to graduation and the State’s safety net options. I encourage parents to book a consultation on my website to discuss their child’s options and legal rights. Be well, and stay safe.
