Day 18: Summer Youth Employment

Yesterday, I was crushed to learn that the City’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) had been cancelled due to the Covid-19 crisis. My firm, MSR Legal & Consulting Services, has been a beneficiary of the internship program, which places thousands of high school and college students with employers throughout the five boroughs. In 2019, I had the privilege of hosting two incredible students at my Richmond Hill, Queens office. I was lucky enough to have their salaries subsidized by the City’s Department of Youth & Community Development.

As I think about all of the SYEP students who will be without a paid summer placement this year, I can’t help but think about teenagers with disabilities who need year-round vocational training. Many parents have been left in the dark about the availability of independent vocational assessments, transition services, community skills training, and travel training.  I encourage parents to book a consultation on my website to discuss their child’s options and legal rights.

Be well, and stay safe.
