Day 23: Tactile Learning while Social Distancing
If you look at your child’s IEP, chances are it recommends multisensory instruction. Many children learn best through the engagement of their tactile sense (sense of touch), in addition to their sight and hearing. In fact, physician and educator Maria Montessori is credited with creating sandpaper alphabets for children to feel the shape of each letter when learning to write. Dr. Montessori believed in the child’s “absorbent mind”, characterized by active learning through sensory experiences.
As you shepherd your child through his or her distance learning program, you’ve probably noticed that the audio-visual instruction lacks tactile support. Or, perhaps the burden has shifted onto you to purchase or produce multisensory materials that were readily available inside your child’s classroom or therapy room.
To discuss your school district’s implementation of your child’s IEP during this crisis, book a consultation on my website: https://www.msrlegal.org/book-your-consultation. Until tomorrow, keep safe,
