Day 5: Customized Education

There are three pillars of my law practice, MSR Legal & Consulting Services:

  1. Community Education;

  2. Medical-Legal Partnerships; and

  3. Customized Education.

Today, I reflected on the importance of the third pillar. I believe strongly in the concept of customized and wholistic education for our children. Under my interpretation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, customized education is not an ideal— it is the law.

When I discuss the concept of customized education at parent workshops, I usually bring up the phrase: “The cookie cutter approach does not work!” The same disability or diagnosis will surely manifest itself differently in each child. That’s why I balk at the notion of blanket recommendations based on a child’s IEP classification or IQ score.

  • Why shouldn’t a child with an average IQ receive 12-month programming if she needs it to prevent regression in certain areas?

  • What if a child appears to read fluently on grade level but a closer look reveals that he has poor comprehension of what he reads?

  • What happens when a seemingly fine general education student begins to exhibit signs of a mental health issue causing his performance to suffer?

I encourage parents to keep customized education in mind when thinking about their child’s current needs, short-term needs, and long-term needs in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
