Day 58: The Head Start Project
Head Start is a national child development program that began in 1965, merging the nursery school movement with the child care movement. It started with the aim of providing educational opportunities to children from low-income backgrounds.
At the heart of the Head Start program was the premise that one’s environment is a major determinant of the extent to which a child can reach his or her potential. Accordingly, Head Start programs were intentionally built to make-up for areas of need in the lives of families. Head Start programs link families to free medical care, mental health care, dental care, healthy meals, and social services, in addition to early childhood education. Parental engagement is a key component as well. Head Start is now one of the largest provider of early childhood services in the country.
A unique aspect of Head Start is its inclusion model. Since 1972, at least 10 percent of enrollment in each Head Start program must be comprised of children with disabilities or other special needs, such as those experiencing homelessness or foster care placement.
