Day 60: Appropriately Ambitious Objectives
An IEP must include measurable, annual academic and functional goals to enable the child to make progress in the general education curriculum.
In Endrew F. v. Douglas County School District (2017), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that, “[The IDEA] requires an educational program reasonably calculated to enable a child to make progress appropriate in light of the child’s circumstances. The goals may differ, but every child should have the chance to meet challenging objectives.” Under Endrew, the longstanding principle of “meaningful” progress was now linked to “appropriately ambitious” objectives.
