Day 7: "Can we go to the playground, Mommy?"

After waiting for my little one to string her words together, my natural inclination has been to indulge each and every request:

  • I want “Elsa dress”! — Here you go!

  • Disney Junior! — (Sigh…) Okay.

  • Where’s my iPad? — Well, let’s go look for it…right now!

  • Can I give you a hug, Mommy? — Of course! I could use one.

But when she asked me today, so politely, “Can we go to the playground, Mommy?”, I was crushed that I could not oblige her. “The playground is closed, honey, just like school is closed.”

How do we as parents communicate such a complex concept to our youngsters, whose lives have changed so quickly and drastically? The playground may not literally be closed to the public, but it’s closed for my family as we try to avoid the inadvertent spread of Covid-19 into our home.

Let’s do our best to offer enrichment to our children during these unstable times. If you’re having trouble doing that— trust me, you're not alone.
