Investing in the I.D.E.A.

In July 2021, a bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Jamaal Bowman of New York. The bill calls for increased funding for public education, including special education. Referred to as the Green New Deal for Public Schools Act of 2021, it proposes to appropriate $33,000,000,000 over 10 years for special education for school-age children. The bill also proposes to fund planning grants and implementation grants for five-year Regional Educational Equity Plans developed by consortia of two or more school districts. Grant funds can be used for staffing purposes and to improve access to curricula and other educational opportunities for students with disabilities.
