NYSED's Position on Remote Instruction

This week, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) issued guidance on remote instruction for the 2021-2022 school year. For more information, visit http://www.nysed.gov/common/nysed/files/programs/back-school/nysed-health-and-safety-guide-for-the-2021-2022-school-year.pdf. While NYSED is not requiring school districts to offer a remote option, NYSED is allowing districts to offer it to students on a case-by-case basis if remote instruction is in the best educational interest of the child. Examples of ‘best educational interest’ may include instances in which a child’s medical condition prevents his or her safe return to school, or where a student who previously struggled in school has excelled with remote instruction. Districts are permitted to cross-contract with other districts to expand remote learning opportunities.
