Day 74: The Last Day of School

Today marks the last day of school of the 2019-2020 school year. What a year 2020 has been, thus far. Parents across the State were probably looking forward to this long-awaited reprieve from mandatory homeschooling, or ‘crisis schooling’, as it is commonly called. Congratulations to all the moms, dads, grandparents, and youngsters who made it to the finish line, despite the obstacles along the way.

We’ve reached Day 74 of my blog, which means that there have been 74 days of crisis schooling due to the pandemic. I kept track of the number of school days to help parents quantify the amount of learning loss experienced by their children with special needs. Many parents have marveled at the heroic efforts of special educators who went above and beyond to provide instruction and related services via computer screen. Notwithstanding the good faith efforts of teachers and therapists, remote learning has been especially difficult for children with IEPs as well as children with poor access to technology and those living in less than suitable learning environments.

As we enter the 2020-2021 school year and brace ourselves for the unknown, it is important to keep in mind that the 2019-2020 school year still counts. Your child was still entitled to a free, appropriate public education as well as all of the instruction and services outlined in his or her IEP. To discuss how MSR Legal might address your child’s compensatory education needs, book a virtual consultation on my website: https://www.MSRLegal.ORG/Book-Your-Consultation . This summer, follow @MSRLegalConsulting on Instagram where I will continue posting about the evolving landscape of special education in the wake of Covid-19.

Have a safe and healthy weekend,

Oroma
